According to Grecian history, Alexander the Great followed an unusual course in the
taking of a city. Before laying siege to a city, that great leader would encamp with
his army just outside the city’s borders and set up a great lantern, which he kept
alight both day and night. This glowing light was a signal to the city’s inhabitants. It
meant that as long as light could be seen from the lamp, the people had time to
surrender; but when the light should be extinguished, the city, and all within its
walls, would be utterly and mercilessly destroyed. The mighty Alexander would not
waver from his word. This calls to mind a comparison. By means of His inspired word,
Christ is ever encouraging us to surrender our will to Him. He pleads, "Come unto
me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)
Again, He says, "If any man will come after me let him deny himself, and take up his
cross, and follow me." (Matthew 16:24)
As long as our life continues, we have opportunity to surrender. However, the lamp
of life will not remain forever lighted. If we foolishly ignore our opportunity, and
find our life is gone, "How shall we escape, if we neglect so great a salvation?"
(Hebrews 2:3) Remember, one of Satan’s greatest lies is: "There is no hurry."
